I live a quarter 15 minutes from the main station (which is nice) and the airport (which really doesn't matter), between forest, vineyards, gardens (which I really love), all situated in a location that would remind you of the Himalaya. And of course a few small flocks of sheep are part of my rural idyll. Wouldn't miss them.

Wow... for the first 10 moves or so my only plan was to get as many pieces off the board as possible. Never thought it would leave me in a position where I could actually win the game... I like this strategy ;-)

First intention indeed is to block someone else from getting the field and building something on it. Though at this point we're not allowed to build on it. For the last couple of years it was rented to a man who put his sheep on it. For now we are just continuing that. Better to have his sheep on it than to have to mow it myself ;-)

Whatever I do, I'm screwed here. Will you set up a decider?

You bought the lot east of your house? In the street view it looks different from the air view. What are you going to do with it? Opening a bathing beach? Erecting the European headquarters of Mastermoves? Or just blocking it for anybody else who might have the idea of getting too close to you.

Okay, "electrical" I might let pass. But be assured that the one war I would be glad to fight would be a civil war against these "50 hp diesel engine mower for a 10 square metres lawn" assholes. It's our good luck that the Real Woman isn't so interested in power tools, or we would have to cope with diesel driven nail filers and the like.

Elementary, mijn lieve (beste?) Holmes. The key to the solution was of course the Hollandse IJssel, first to find a city whose name would ring a bell, and Montfoort did, and then a place which had a street/road on one side and the H.IJ. on the other. The first guess was before I know that our wanted place can be inspected by Google street view, the second guess was simply wrong, and then there were only two locations, with three or four houses each, left, and of these houses, 138 Willeskop came closest to the blurry picture in my mind based on some photographs I had looked at years ago. But one thing: I cannot imagine you giving a damn about hedgecare. So do you have a gardener, is it your wife's work, or am I wrong? :-)

Yup, that's great. They don't have this streetview in Germany, not even for the center of Munich or Berlin.

Your place then must be Heeswijk in the 60s, maybe 70. If I still had the pictures you sent after you had bought your house, I probably would find it. Now don't tell me, I'm wrong again ... :-)

Google maps is really great. At our place you can actually drag and drop the little man above the zoom slider on the map and watch it from streetview.

I was for some recent just checking out a street in Paris with Google maps. I never knew what you can do with it. If you want to look at my place, it's Stuttgart, Frauenkopfstrasse 27. It's the small house between two big ones on the "southern" side. One of the two black cars must be mine. :-)

I tried to check out your place from what I know about it. I have three guesses, okay? First guess: Mastwijkerdijk.

I give it as much effort as I feel sticking into it at the moment I make the move. Which isn't always my best, I admit, when I feel not so in the mood. It would be better to just not make a move at those times. Oh well. I'm trying a different approach here. Let's see where this leads us.

No ciao over here at all. 'Tot ziens', 'tot morgen' or 'fijne avond/prettige avond' are quite commonly used. Or informal 'Doei' or 'Doeg'.

I come from the south, where we say Houdoe (short/slang for Hou je goed, take good care of yourself), and in some cities 'adie' is used. We're not that different ;-)

Yes.

People here often say "Ade!" (with the stress on the e). The Duden says: becoming obsolete, still in regional use -- and that's it. "Nun ade, du mein lieb Heimatland ..." -- they sure don't learn this in school today. :-) Of course, "ade" has its roots in the French "adieu", and that's what I prefer for quite some time now. Of course if I say goodbye to some older person I take a small bow and say "Auf Wiedersehen!".

Is "ciao" so famous with you people as it is here?

Now that is interesting. The background of my question was that Van Gaal in a recent tv interview was asked whether it was true that his daughters say U to him, and he said "yes" and explained it. Of course he didn't say in so many words that it is a dying custom (which I suspected).

Anyway, I am surprised, though clearly not disappointed, that you are a U sayer though I couldn't imagine to have gesiezt my parents. In Germany this is a dead custom.

In my midtwenties I really exercised how to politely refuse Duz-Angebote. A friend of mine was stubbornly gesiezt by his mother-in-law to be, and she offerd him das Du only on the wedding day. I think if he could change only one thing in his life it would be that he accepted this offer. :-)

Well, I am one.. I address my parents with U. But my kind is a dying breed. Even my brother doesn't. And indeed U is becoming very formal. In a business relation you might want to use it but between colleagues that you meet everyday it's all jij and jou. To elderly people and other people that deserve respect you might want to do it (that's the main reason I keep addressing my parent with U) but even that is quickly deminishing. I think it's because of the influence of english where everything is 'you'.

Anyway: In how many families that you know of do the children aanspreken their father with U?

I thought Luca Toni was overrated even in his first Bayern season where he really scored a lot. But his goals vs. missed chances ratio was about 1/5. MAy well be that Klose and Makaay would have been a better tandem than Klose and Toni.

With this Juve game van Gaal got some air to breathe. But Juve don't seem to be what they were. Let's see what will happen in the next round. There it won't be that easy. I have no feelings towards vG either way.

FLAUWE KUL! Maybe I won more LoA games but this was up to my using a board and more time. All other games we tried --Connect[ris/4], Dots and Boxes, Phutball, Breakthrough, Amazons (!!!), this flower picking thing, and what have you-- you beat the shit out of me. I wonder how we'd end up at Diplomacy. Leute in Grund und Boden schwätzen, I'd like to try that. But only in German.

First of all, most of these abstract games you are way way WAY better than I am. Second, these border-to-border games seem to favour the starting player (or the one going second) which gives you an unbeatable advantage in one game, and in the other one I'm still an underdog...

Backgammon and variants (Moultezim, Plakoto) and Pente still seem to have the largest player base. Conhex looks to me as if it was worth a try, but you never were a great fan of these border-to-border games, right?

Connectris is okay but I don't like Connect4 that much anymore. And a UI shouldn't be so hard to build for those either, but apparently not enough player base for them to do that?

I don't know how active Gamerz still is... it might be interesting to port some games to MM if the copyright allows it (like this one). Though that would mean more work for me to build them all... hmmm....
